Amazon Exclusive: Q & A with James Rollins
Q: In Bloodline, you introduce two new characters, Tucker and Kane, a pair unlike any your readers have seen before. Tell us about them, and why you decided to write about them?
James Rollins: First of all, I wanted to honor these unique American heroes. Tucker Wayne is a former captain with the Army Rangers. After two tours of duty in Afghanistan, he leaves the service disillusioned after a bloody battle. Aided by members of his own unit, Tucker steals his war dog, Kane.
What I liked best about exploring this pair’s unique relationship is a phrase commonly used by military war dog handlers–It runs down the lead–describing how the emotions of the pair became shared over time, binding them together as firmly as any leash. And it’s that bond and ability for the two to operate as one that I wanted to explore in this novel.
Q: Can you tell us about your research into military dogs?
JR: About a year and half ago, I was lucky enough to participate in a USO tour of authors to military bases in Iraq and Kuwait. There, I saw several of these war dogs in action. I was also able to meet and talk to a veterinary school classmate of mine who works with the veterinary corps out in Iraq. After that encounter, it got me thinking about writing this book, of honoring these unique war heroes on the page.
Q: Women play a large role in Bloodline. How are you able to write from the point of view of women so well?
JR: I have three sisters who make sure I get those details correct, but also during my USO tour to Iraq and Kuwait, I got a chance to talk at length to women in the field–to hear what it’s like to be a female in the armed services. And that'[s something I tried to capture accurately.
Q: Your novels always delve into the cutting edge of science. What is the scientific basis behind Bloodline?
JR: The root of this book came from a recent article in Time magazine. The cover declared: 2045, the Year Man Becomes Immortal. I read that and wondered how that could become true. Could immortality be achievable in our lifetime? It sent me into a yearlong and chilling investigation into the frontiers of life extension.
Q: What are some of these new discoveries involving immortality?
JR: I’ve learned that there are actually two competing schools of study when it comes to the search for immortality. On one side, scientists are looking at moving man into machines, moving our consciousness into a synthetic arena. Scientists in Switzerland right now are working with IBM to create the first virtual human brain and say they are about a decade off from achieving this goal.
On the other side of the scientific fence, researchers are also looking at moving machines into us: basically replacing our failing parts with artificial organs. We already have synthetic pancreases and mechanical hearts, and these scientific advancements continue to accelerate, especially with the explosive growth of nanotechnology, which involves engineering at the atomic level.
Q: Now to the last and most pressing question: How close are we to achieving immortality?
JR: That’s a good question–and the answer is the most startling revelation I discovered while researching this story, something I share within the pages of this book. In Bloodline, readers will learn a shocking scientific truth about the nature of mankind: That immortal beings already walk among us today.

Blood blood everywhere, not a drop for me
He is a thalassemia patient waiting at a blood bank. Such patients need blood infusion on a regular basis to survive, but in spite of having very common blood group, they hardly get any blood. This is due to a massive shortage of voluntary blood donors in the country. Blood donation is easy, safe and painless — only a small amount of blood is taken and the body replenishes this small loss very soon. Any healthy fit young person can donate blood today to save lives tomorrow. Also, if you have a rare, "negative" blood type, please keep a list of possible donors and blood banks ready. Emergencies may knock at any time.

Story
Throughout the world the people of the major powers throughout the land live in peace and prosperity, unaware that a great evil lurks on the horizon. There is a clandestine group, who under the guise of scholarly research are plotting to resurrect a goddess whose time has long since passed. To achieve this goal, they need two things: a vessel of flesh and blood to house the spirit of the goddess, and the lives of every living being offered up as a sacrifice. It is against the backdrop of this coming chaos that Ares, an orphan from a small, forgotten village, sets out to seek his fortune as an adventurer. At the start of his journey, he encounters a beautiful young girl with mysterious powers named Sierra, who has not only lost her memories about herself, but also of the world around her. Together, they embark on an adventure that will ultimately decide the fate of the entire world.
Gameplay
Ragnarok DS is an action RPG featuring the same gameworld and quest based gameplay type found in the original Ragnarok Online PC game, with special tweaks designed to enhance handheld gameplay. Features specific to Ragnarok DS include: attacks and commands optimized for implementation via DS touch screen, three-player online DS wireless support, multiple levels of job classes and multiple ways to upgrade equipment.
Two Ways to Quest
There are two kinds of quests for players to tackle in the world of Ragnarok DS: scenario quests to advance the story, and optional side quests that can be completed at the player’s leisure. Scenario quests will become available as you progress through the main storyline of the game. Players will be required to complete scenario quests in a predetermined order to continue through the game. To engage in a side quest, players can either go to the tavern in each city, talk with various NPCs, or advance in a specific job class. Many side quests have various prerequisites before they become unlocked, and other of them won’t be available until after the main story of the game has been completed.
Key Game Features
Flexible Character Development System – Characters earn both status and skill points each time they gain a level, and these points can be allocated to customize their skills across a wide range of different job classes such as Swordsman, Thief, and Merchant.
Upgradable Weapons and Armor – Characters’ armor and weapons can be upgraded by a blacksmith, or by affixing effect cards dropped by defeated monsters. Blacksmith upgrades will improve an item’s overall stats, while effect cards boost specific features.
Gameplay Optimized for Touch Screen – All attacks and commands are performed using the DS or DSi’s Touch Screen. Slash with the stylus to attack with your sword, and circle or tap the intended target to unleash magic spells.
Party-based Multiplayer – Players can take on the Mirage Tower with up to 2 other friends via local wireless connection or Wi-Fi With more than 50 floors, randomly generated maps and completion conditions, and the chance to obtain rare items, players can enjoy this feature long after the main story has been completed.
Job Classes – Job classes are broken down into low level jobs and high level jobs with two special jobs unique to Ragnarok DS. A high level job can only be achieved by following the corresponding development path from its low level job.
Easy Customization and Character Equipping – Customize your character with the single touch of your stylus. Equip weapons, armor, and accessories you obtained simply by tapping them with the stylus.
Two Ways to Quest – Ragnarok DS players enjoy both story-driven scenario quests as well as optional and ample side quests.
